What is Cancel Culture?
Cancel Culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (Cancelling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group sahming.
How did it start?
According to Christopher Brito ``One of the earliest pop culture references to someone being "canceled" was in late 2014, during an episode of VH1's reality show "Love and Hip-Hop: New York." Cisco Rosado, a cast member, and music executive told his then-girlfriend Diamond Strawberry, "You're canceled," after she revealed she had a daughter. The word took on a life of its own among mostly Black users on Twitter. It was used as a way to show disapproval for a person's actions as a joke or lighthearted criticism.``. The Insider said that the phrase "cancel culture" was popularized around 2017 after the idea of "canceling" celebrities for problematic actions or statements became popular.
How does it work?
We usually label people as “cancelled” when someone finds inappropriate or offensive to a person in the way they act or speak. They immediately post it on social media, other people will share it, then it goes viral. One thing they’ll know is that thousands of articles are already posted on social media to spread negativity and people expressing anger to them which results in receiving hateful comments. It involves calling out the bad behavior, boycotting their work, and trying to take away their popularity and power, which is most common especially in online communities.
